In a special way, Catholic Charities belongs to every Catholic within the Arlington Diocese. It must be close to our hearts and never separated from the life of the Church. As Pope Benedict declared in “Deus Caritas Est,” charity is as essential to the Church as the Word and the sacraments. One cannot exist without the other. Though the Word and the sacraments lie at the heart of the Church, charity is its soul. As we go forward, let us recall Christ’s words: “Without me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5). I urge you to join us as we renew our pledge to serve the Church through Catholic Charities“. – From Their Website – http://www.ccda.net

Hey Folks, The Weekend Is Almost Here, And Boy Are We Getting Ready For The NFL Playoffs. That Being Said, Let’s Keep In Mind The Folks Who Need A Little Extra Help This Time Of Year. The Focal Point Of Today’s Shelter Spotlight is The Capuchin Soup Kitchen located in Detroit, Michigan.

Each week they serve over 2,500 meals and each year the supply nearly 300,000 lbs of food to the hungry and homeless in the surrounding areas. Founded in 1883, they are one of oldest Soup Kitchens in the United States. They are located at 4390 Conner Ave., Detroit, MI 48215 and can be reached by phone at: (313) 822-8606.

Since its inception, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has depended on the time and efforts of others in the community who shared our concern and commitment to the poor. At the heart of our mission is the service of the many volunteers that donate their time on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Whether preparing food in the kitchen, serving meals to guests; planting, weeding or harvesting in the Earthworks garden; hanging clothing, building pantry boxes or packaging meat in the Services Center; tutoring or mentoring a child or assisting in the Arts program at the Children’s Library, volunteers provide the extra pair of hands, the warm smile and caring attitude that make the Capuchin Soup Kitchen what it is. The hours of service given by volunteers translates into over 30 additional full time staff that would have to be employed to serve those who come to our door. The generous gift of time given to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen by volunteers insures that we are able to return eighty-nine cents of every donated dollar to direct client services“. – From their website: http://www.cskdetroit.org
